I love, love, love that you are doing this, and I love Mary Richards joining you as well. I have the book and find myself having to re-read many of the pages to try and digest it…I want to join you in this review as your insights make it easier to understand. My teaching theme this morning is “issues in our tissues” and I love Mary saying we all have trauma, we each have our own lived experience”. Thank you both for this gift you’ve given us…and PS. If you are going to be at Feathered Pipe Ranch this summer, I want to join your retreat🙏🙏🙏
Grabbed a copy from the library yesterday when I heard you were doing this as it's been years since I listened to it and probably retained 1%. (And the librarian of this very small town library looked at me funny because the book "just came in yesterday"....ah I love the synchronicity!). Lots of great takeaways in your first episode, but as a nerd, I'm mostly stoked to learn the term "psychoneuroimmunology". And this quote from Mary which lines right up with what I aim to teach my students: "Instead of trying to THINK our way out of pain, we need to FEEL our way into ourselves." I seriously need that on a T-shirt.
Such great clarification of the definition of trauma. YES, we all have trauma. Stop, Breathe, Listen and Feel to find it and heal it. Many thanks again!
Hello ladies this is Pamela and I'm a regular at Mary's monthly Asana Lab. This is so great because I'm reading this book right now and so ready to follow along with you. I'm a yoga practitioner since high school and a career speech language pathologist, and this topic has far reaching impacts on communication, behaviors, emotions. Collective trauma, transgenerational trauma, personal trauma, hereditary trauma, are noted as intergenerational , and carried forward, imprinted on the body's internal systems for succeeding generations. It goes on and on, pandemic , Ukraine. Somatic self-care, especially pranayama, has helped tremendously, and I tell all my friends about it. Looking forward to the next episode, Pam
Currently living in Brno, Czech Republic. Living and studying life through yoga teaching, gardening, biking, loving my boyfriend and my family. Very happy to connect with you, your mom and all your beautiful community. Very inspiring.
Fantastic book, tough read...where can I find the schedule for the rest of the sessions. Is it free? Thanks Lizzie and Mary. You two are awesome. I can never get enough Mary.
I very much enjoyed this podcast and will order the book. As a yoga teacher/practitioner, I am so enjoying the deeper understanding of why I have been drawn to yoga. As Lizzie explained her knowing “in her bones” that if she starts her day with her 30 minutes by herself nurturing her introspection, the rest of her day, and interactions with others is also positively affected. Intuitively, I understand this and know this is what has drawn me to yoga. I am learning as my yoga practice continues to develop, and with more emphasis on meditation and pranyama, it is starting to make sense. As many of us can agree, the past two years have been traumatic with the loss of social connection due to the pandemic. Thank you, Mary Richards, for helping us understand that, “if you are human, you have experienced trauma.” This actually gave me permission to be ok with my feelings of trauma whether personal, professionally, or during COVID. Thank you to you both!!!!
This is so crazy!! I just ordered that book yesterday! It has been on my list for awhile and yesterday I made it happen and not today you all post that you are going to work through the book with you podcast!! I am so excited to be on this journey with you all!!
That was a fantastic and very informative conversation. It is definitely a book that needs to be taken apart and explained. I’m looking forward to the next podcast. 🙏🏽🌻 Astrid
I like Mary's phraseology: "cultivate agency in our own healing processes." That resonates with me; it is what my yoga provides. I read this book in the spring of 2019 and yup, it was dense, and also jam packed with information, especially related to trauma.
My take-away from today's conversation: attuning to our inner state (physical, emotional, cognitive…) provides a place from which we can then nourish ourselves, leading to improved interactions with others. I look forward to revisiting the content of Bessel's book via these conversations. Thanks, Mary and Lizzie.
Teaching your children to honor your practice on the mat, and also to join you on the mat (two different things) are both so important. It helps model self-care. It models rest. It models boundaries to them. It models how to take care of themselves, and how to respect others' boundaries in relationships they will have in the future, as well as how to negotiate their own needs and self-care.
Your children are tiny, and mine are not that much older. Mine are 5-8. However, mine have reached an age where they can safely occupy themselves in the play room while I practice on the mat and they can honor a "yoga in session" sign on my studio door and delay their question for at least 30 minutes.
I remember 2 and 3 and 4, when they could not. Being a mama to very young ones affords very little time for self, and we so need it.
Dr. Van der Kolk's book Body Keeps the Score is an incredible text; but as you said dense and ALOT to process. I got this book on Audible to listen, and keep on listening. Your discussion with Mary Richards is so helpful the way you are breaking this book down. All a process to learn, live and integrate. AND we bring all to our students, resting in Self, knowing ourselves, making space around emotions; letting all BE. Balanced in self and with one another. Thank you again for bringing all of these pearls of information to us; for such gifts you give us all Lizzie, Mary and dearest Judith 🌻
Awesome podcast...have tried to read this book about 3 times now but I am encouraged to try again. Defining trauma as something that everyone has had feels like such a relief. Thank you to both Lizzie and Mary for wanting to take care of us!

Great! See you there...

I’ve had this book on my audible for a couple years and have yet to dive in. This feels like a good sign and time :) thank you for the invite! 😊
Looking so forward to this. Thank you, Lizzie and Mary. Jai!
Brilliant!
Thank you so much Lizzie and Mary.
