The twins and I are reading the Dr. Seuss book Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! on repeat. (Side note: great as your next baby gift. Along with my all-time favorite: Baby Feminists.)
The first page says: “You can think up some birds. That’s what you can do. You can think about yellow or think about blue.”
It makes me smile because, for me, thinking is often the problem. I have a great capacity for ruminating and infinite loops of anxious thought. Does that happen to you?
The solution is doing something with my body: yoga asana or pranayama or hiking, or even a few squats and pushups can do the trick. I find changing the state of my physical body is the most direct way to change the state of my mind.
What’s the most effective or silly way you changed your mental state by changing your body this week?
Later today Mama’s teaching a workshop called Practical Mysticism: Staying Rooted in the Present, On and Off the Mat. We’ll learn techniques for extending the “yoga glow” feeling into our lives. Spoiler alert: we’ll be practicing Restorative yoga. Live on Zoom with access to a recording.
And next month, Kripalu retreat center is hosting a Zoom event with us called Letting the Breath Find You: Practicing Pranayama With Compassion. Breathing is such an accessible way to shift the nervous system - and Mama has such a gentle way of teaching these powerful practices.
Hope to see you online somewhere soon. Until then, here’s a free guided Restorative Savasana practice for you. May it be of service.
Sending love across the skies,
Lizzie
Taking a walk is best for me as Being in nature fills my soul.
Walking has kept me sane through the last 2 years (and the preceding 67).
