How human of me to snap at my kids, to get frustrated when the internet drops out during a big Zoom class, to miss an appointment. That phrase—a small way of forgiving myself—I learned from my Mama (who literally wrote a book on non-violent communication with my Dad).
My parents began studying this technique when I was a preteen. Back then, I kept it at arm’s length. It felt too wholesome, or maybe even manipulative. Yuck.
Now, as a parent, I’m softer, more desperate perhaps. Parenting keeps bringing me to the edge of myself and my partnership, as Nico and I constantly negotiate the tug-of-war over time and freedom.
Mama says it all starts with self-empathy. Forgiving ourselves first. A tool I’m only just starting to learn. That’s why we’re offering a course on non-violent communication in January. Six live (recorded) sessions with Mama. The way she teaches it—begins with how we speak to ourselves. Early bird enrollment through the end of the year.
